Why simonsleep®

THE PILLOW THAT CHANGED RULES

The first pillow to truly support the neck and head the way nature intended.

What’s different?

SIDE SLEEPING WITH OUR NATURE INTENDED SHOULDER-LED NECK SUPPORT.

BACK SLEEPING WITH OUR COMFORT ZONE SUPPORT AND ADJUSTABLE HEIGHT.

FLAT IS OUT, SEMI PRONE IS IN.

Designed by an osteopath. Inspired by evolution.

When side-sleeping, the shoulder, not the pillow, is the true foundation for proper neck alignment.

Did you know the way you sleep today is rooted in millions of years of evolution?

As humans, we share a deep connection with our primate relatives, who have perfected their sleep postures in the wild. At simonsleep®, we believe better sleep begins with embracing the natural alignment that nature intended. We took inspiration from nature and our primate cousins, the great apes, who instinctively rest in positions that protect the spine and ease pressure on joints. They adopt perfect sleeping postures by protecting their spine and joints in simple primal postures, supported by their carefully crafted nests.

The result? A pillow that follows the body’s natural alignment, without resistance. A pillow that doesn’t force a posture. It adapts, moves, and supports the way you naturally rest. Our pillow allows for another key feature to enhance the natural posture: it’s adjustability.

What Is the Best Sleeping Position?

“The best sleep position is the one that helps you sleep soundly and wake up feeling refreshed – without pain or stiffness. If your current position works, there’s no need to change it. But if you’re not sleeping well, it’s worth trying a new posture to see if it feels more natural and supportive,”

Simon Bacon, Osteopath.

COMMON SLEEP POSITIONS

Human Sleep Postures

  • Side sleeping: Approximately 54% of adults prefer sleeping on their side making it the most popular sleep posture. This position is the most popular sleeping position. We recommend it its potential benefits in maintaining spinal alignment and reducing back pain.

  • Back sleeping: About 37% of people sleep on their back, making it the second most popular sleeping position. However, only about 10% of adults are exclusive back sleepers throughout the night. It is generally considered beneficial for spinal health, as it allows the head, neck, and spine to rest in a neutral position.
  • Stomach sleeping (Prone Sleeping): About 7% of the population sleeps on their stomachs, also known as the prone position. We don’t recommend sleeping on your front for good neck posture, as it results in your neck being turned. It’s not that simple though! There are other benefits of stomach sleeping; you can find out more here.
  • Semi-prone sleep position: A 3/4 turned posture, a front-facing posture with slight angling, offers specific bio-mechanical advantages, including reduced joint pressure and enhanced spinal alignment, depending on individual anatomy and support systems. This position has gained attention for its potential to alleviate certain discomforts.

Side Sleeping

Most common and generally recommended.

  • Health Benefits

  1. Spinal alignment:
Reference: Proper alignment of the spine reduces strain on the back and neck.
  2. Reduces snoring:
Side sleeping helps keep the airway open and reduces pressure on the throat, making it less likely to collapse, which reduces snoring.
  3. Improved digestion:
Left-side sleeping has been shown to aid digestion by allowing food to move more easily from the stomach to the intestines and reducing acid reflux.
  4. Pregnancy support:
Sleeping on the left side improves circulation and nutrient flow to the fetus and reduces pressure on organs like the liver.
  5. Brain health (glymphatic system):
Left-side sleeping has been shown to aid digestion by allowing food to move more easily from the stomach to the intestines and reducing acid reflux.

Back Sleeping

Most common and generally recommended.

  • Health Benefits

  • Neck and spine alignment:
Back sleeping with the right pillow can support proper spinal alignment, minimizing pressure on joints and muscles.
  • Prevents facial wrinkles and skin compression:
Since the face is not pressed into the pillow, back sleeping reduces the formation of sleep lines and wrinkles.
  • May reduce acid reflux:
Elevating the head during back sleeping can prevent stomach acid from moving into the esophagus, reducing heartburn and acid reflux:
  • Good for circulation:
Even weight distribution during back sleeping promotes optimal circulation throughout the body.

Semi-Prone 3/4 Position Sleeping

A hybrid of side and stomach sleeping-instinctive and under-recognised as a sleep posture,. It is often criticised as it can encourage poor spinal posture, but not if your pillow is low and your head is allowed to turn while not being raised on a pillow. The simonsleep® pillow allows you to remove filling to lower the pillow loft and rediscover the semi-prone sleeping position.

  • Health Benefits

  1. Natural spinal alignment:
Many people find the semi-prone position instinctively comfortable, offering a sense of security and aiding relaxation.
  2. Reduces snoring:
Like side sleeping, semi-prone positions keep the airway open and alleviate snoring.
  3. Protective position:
The semi-prone position is often used in first aid as it allows for breathing stability and prevents choking or airway collapse.
  4. Improved digestion and circulation:
Sleeping on the left side while in semi-prone posture has similar benefits to full side sleeping, promoting digestion and circulation.
  5. Comfort and relaxation:
Many people find the semi-prone position instinctively comfortable, offering a sense of security and aiding relaxation.

Sustainability

Reduces Waste
Our shredded foam comes from unused solid foam offcuts. This repurposing helps reduce overall waste.

Refillable and Reusable
Our pillow allows users to add or remove foam to adjust loft and firmness. This customisation can extend the pillow’s usable life and reduce waste.

Durability
Memory foam is long-lasting, which means products like pillows don’t need to be replaced as frequently, reducing long-term environmental impact.
